The Wabi-Sabi Academy is an exciting new concept in health, self-defence and tea!
The owners, Tony and Roz Gadd have established what they feel is a beautiful new tearoom serving fine teas and infusions from around the world including “bubble tea”. It specialises though, in Chinese teas and the warm cheese scones are a big hit! Tony and Roz feel that those of you who are health conscious will appreciate the health benefits of the Chinese teas, but may want to try the Chinese Health Qigong (Pronounced “chi-gung”). This is a form of exercise that is suitable for all ages and abilities but is particularly useful for middle to old age. Qigong is safe and easy to learn according to Tony and Roz. It combines exercise for the breath, mind and body. The aim is to strengthen muscles and bones, promote energy and blood circulation, prevention and curing diseases, maintain good health and prolong life span. After Qigong they say that you should feel comfortable, refreshed, happy and content.
The Academy teaches Kukkiwon Taekwondo, including specialist 3-6 year old programme and the Ultimate Blackbelt programme! These martial arts programmes are taught in a way that focuses not only on the work the student does in class, but by working with the student to develop a whole range of skills that make the student a true martial artist.
Tony and Roz say that the instructors at Wabi-Sabi have backgrounds that allow them to teach and promote ‘real” self-defence in courses and seminars. They know that many of the self-defence courses promoted are all but useless in real life situations. Many of the techniques that are taught are difficult for most people to produce even in a training environment. Locks and pressure points require years of training, even then, they may not work for a variety of reasons. Tony and Roz say ‘The truth is that when an attack comes, we feel fear; and a natural result of that fear, is one that we can not control, that is the “adrenaline dump”. This can be devastating, especially if you are not prepared for it. The good news is, a high percentage of attacks can be avoided all together with good instruction. They want to talk to people before an incident occurs (and of course, we all hope an “incident” never arrives). Before is 1000-times better than anything that can be talked about after something happens.
Tony and Roz feel that the Wabi-Sabi Academy is about prevention. Prevention is far, far better than therapy-after-the-fact. They want the community to live without fear, without paranoia, without feeling constantly at risk, but they also want you to know your options. They want you to be able to fight for your life should you need to. They also provide a number of free courses for residents e.g. a 10 week programme for girls and women.
In the business of prevention, The Wabi-Sabi Academy are dedicated to the prevention of bullying, prejudice, violence in all its forms but also tackling common health issues such as obesity, promoting healthy, balanced exercise to prevent common illnesses and much more. As well as martial arts classes, there are cardio, strength and flexibility classes too, a small gym and “Punch Bag Alley”! (all of these are available to members to compliment and enhance the skills they learn in the training environment).
On the mind and wellness side, there is also a mediation room and meditation classes will be coming in the near future. In the mediation room there is a light box too and colour therapy is available.
That’s not all though, there is also training available in anger management, communication, leadership skills, confidence building, team building and behaviour profiling. The Wabi-Sabi Academy provides consultancy to businesses and motivational speaking.
