The Pitman’s Parliament in the Miners’ Hall, Durham is a unique place. For almost a century, it was the scene of many important debates which shaped the lives of our mining communities in the Durham coalfield.
To raise money for the renovation of the pitman’s parliament, they launcheda one-off sponsorship scheme.
The seats went ‘on sale’ in November, last year and the Parish Council sponsored two of them. The money raised will go towards the Redhills renovation project. By sponsoring the seats the Parish Council received two a personalised “pit tokens” attached to the seat. There are 150 seats for which the lodge number is known. One of the tokens, representing the Joint Stocks Colliery at Coxhoe, is pictured here and will be kept at the Village Hall. The other, inscripted ‘Crowtrees Colliery’, is being held at Quarrington Hill Community Centre.

The County Durham Plan sets the planning policy framework up to 2035 to support the development of a thriving economy in County Durham, while at the same time protecting those things that are important to us all. It identifies a number of sites for new employment, new housing and new infrastructure to accommodate the growth needed to achieve these ambitions.
The Pre-Submission Draft of the Plan is the final consultation stage. It is an important stage as it is an opportunity for you to make comments on the Plan before it is submitted for examination by an independent Inspector. Find our more about the consultation here.
